You’ll need to open the config file for editing. You will need to enter the current password, then the new one and finally confirm the new password. Just in case changing the password is desired. Replace the current name with a new name, save the file (Ctrl x to save, y to confirm) then reboot the pi. To change the hostname you will need to modify the /etc/hostname file. I also like to keep an organized range of IP addresses for all the pi’s since remoting in is more common for me than direct logins. To solve this I change the hostname for each Pi using different pi names (raspberry, blueberry, apple). For those like me with multiple Raspberry Pi’s it becomes a pain to see multiple raspberrypi hostnames. When you join a BOINC project your account will keep track of all hosts connected to it by keeping track of the hostname. Simple setup for a simple desktop environment. sudo apt-get install xfce4Īfter installation the desktop can be started through the terminal using the following command. Once Raspbian has been updated install the Xfce desktop environment. Before installing any Xfce make sure to update and upgrade the current packages. I do not setup my desktops to run on boot since I mostly remote into the pi’s but require to have a GUI occasionally. I chose Xfce since it is one of the lighter end desktop environments and requires no extra steps for running the Xserver. This will give 16 megabytes of memory to the GPU. Choose the Split Memory option and type in 16. To split the memory navigate to the Advanced Options option and click enter. This will tell the Raspberry Pi that there is a lot more space on the micro SD card than the few megabytes that it currently owns. To expand the filesystem choose the Expand Filesystem option. To do this run the following command: sudo raspi-config Raspbian Configurationīefore going any further we need to expand the filesystem and split the memory for the GPU. This article is to record how to setup BOINC on Raspbian as well as a desktop environment (personal preference). Why This Article?Īs previously stated I have had a couple Raspberry Pi 2’s laying around collecting dust and decided to put their processing power to good use. When the computation completes it is sent to the server and a new task is delivered. The end result is that while a person goes about their day using the computer computations will be performed in the background as long as the computer is powered on. The person can decide how much processing power and time to give to the project(s). The server will then register the computer the software is on, assign a Cross Project ID (cpid) and then send tasks to the computer, one for each core (so a four core processor will get four tasks). They then join a project (or multiple projects) by registering with an email address and password (one for each project). This is how it works: A person installs the BOINC software on the computer. These projects range from classifying galaxies to finding cures for diseases such as Malaria, Alzheimer’s and certain strains of cancer. BOINC allows a person to donate their idle processing power to scientific projects. While people use computers every day only a fraction of the total computing power is ever used, leaving large amounts of idle processor time. Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. Raspberry Pi is a trademark of the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Their official website can be found at and respectively. Raspberry Pi & BOINC are not associated with Modern Day Lore and do not endorse it in anyway. Legalīefore continuing we need to take care of some legal procedures. A while back I bought two Raspberry Pi 2’s and decided that it was time to put it to good use instead of collecting dust. If your devices are running hot, and you can't add cooling, you can reduce heat by limiting the amount of CPU BOINC is permitted to use.For almost a year now I have been participating in BOINC using only a virtualized client on my server. You run the risk of seriously damaging the components, or even starting a fire. ✻ Smokey says: A NEW LIFE AWAITS US in our post-transition future Be smart with your electronics, never operate them with inadequate ventilation. Users can decide which projects they participate in, using the free and open-source BOINC client software. A subreddit dedicated to all things BOINC, a platform enabling the public to volunteer their computer's processing capability towards research projects distributed across the globe.
